Wine Fountains in Italy’s Abruzzo Region

A fountain that dispenses wine sounds like an incredible idea, but a town in Italy’s Abruzzo region has just made it a reality. A local winery has installed a fountain that dispenses red wine to visitors 24 hours a day, completely free of charge. It’s the first of its kind in the country, according to the winery Dora Sarchese Vini.

The fountain was created in collaboration with an organization that promotes a popular pilgrimage route called the Cammino di San Tommaso, or “Way of St. Thomas.” The route connects historical churches and abbeys and is a frequent destination for Roman Catholic tourists who walk the entire path on foot from Rome.

In the past, Italian villages have used fountains to dispense water and wine, but this is the first one that has been open to the public 24 hours a day. Dora Sarchese Vini says the wine fountain is intended to refresh and entertain pilgrims who travel along the 196-mile trail.

While the fountain will certainly be a draw for visitors, the winery hopes it will also help raise awareness of its Montepulciano Nitae grapes and encourage people to drink responsibly. The fountain is located in the city of Caldari di Ortona, and locals are invited to stop by and enjoy a glass of wine.
