Key Skills For a Counsellor

Counselling is a process where you talk with a professional about any problems or worries you may have in a safe and confidential environment. The sessions can be face-to-face, online or over the telephone and may last for a few sessions, weeks or months depending on your needs. A counsellor will listen and help you understand your feelings and thoughts, and then guide you towards finding your own solutions to your problems. They will not give you their own opinion or advice and should never tell you what to do. If you feel that your counsellor is not listening to you or judging you, they are not doing their job properly and it would be best to find another therapist.

The key skills for a counsellor are empathy and analysis. Clients will often be bringing up very personal issues and the ability to build trust is very important. It is also necessary to be able to read between the lines and interpret what clients aren’t saying. For example, a client with an abusive relationship might not be able to vocalise their fears and anxieties. This can make the counselling session very difficult for both parties and may cause the client to feel worse in the short term.

Other key skills for a counsellor include an understanding of different treatment techniques and approaches. For example, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can be useful in helping clients identify harmful beliefs and behaviours and replace them with healthier ones.
