How to Build Your Resume

Building your resume is one of the most important parts of your job search. A well-built, impactful resume gives hiring managers a glimpse into your abilities and experience that will make them want to learn more about you. When building your resume, it’s critical to include the must-have sections: a resume summary, work experience, education, and skills. It’s also vital to tailor your resume for each job you apply for by focusing on measurable achievements instead of responsibilities and using powerful, action-oriented words like accelerated, achieved, enhanced, effected, managed, and solved.

Step #1 – Create an Impactful Resume Summary
The resume summary (also known as a career summary) is an extremely powerful part of your resume that can make or break whether or not the hiring manager will read through your entire resume. To make it stand out, start with a clear, strong headline that clearly identifies your expertise and value proposition. Then, add your education section (include the type of degree and the program) followed by work experience. Make sure to include the full name of each company, a short description, and the dates you worked there.

The next section is the “Skills” section, which highlights all of your relevant skills and abilities. This can be both hard and soft skills, which are both quantifiable (coding in Python or Excel) and non-quantifiable (leadership or critical thinking).
