Different Types of Dog Collars
Dog Collars have been a key part of our relationship with dogs for thousands of years. They allow us to control our dogs, while also displaying our love and affection for them. With so many different types of collars available (and new ones being designed all the time), it can be confusing as to which one is right for you and your dog.
Standard flat nylon or polyester collars are inexpensive, lightweight and comfortable for your dog. They’re also adjustable, making them a good option for growing puppies and dogs that put on weight or lose their winter coats. However, they tend to absorb odors and are less durable than other types of collars.
Classic leather collars are attractive and flexible, with the added benefit of being durable and long-lasting. They’re also less likely to absorb odors and are easier to clean than nylon. However, they’re a little thicker than most other types of collars, which can cause neck rub and irritation for some dogs.
A prong collar, sometimes known as a pinch or a slip choke collar, has a control loop made of chain that fits around your dog’s neck. When a quick, sharp tug on the leash is applied, the chain tightens, which can make your dog experience pain and bring their attention back to you. Although they’re not recommended by most behaviorists and veterinarians, some owners find them useful for training.
Fashion collars often come with decorative accessories like mini bow ties, embedded jewels or metal spikes. While they can look beautiful, these decorations can pose a choking risk for your dog or break off and get caught on something else, such as an overgrown plant or a branch. Dog Collars
